Match the record before playing the music
Start by identifying the sleeve or searching for the release. Read the artist and title, especially when several editions have similar artwork. Listening to the wrong result can send a promising record straight back into the rack.
DISCTALE connects recognition with listening. When a match is sufficiently reliable and a playable source is available, a preview can begin automatically according to your settings. Less certain results can ask you to choose first. A match does not guarantee that audio will be available.
Understand what you are hearing
The app can offer available Apple catalogue previews and YouTube videos. Availability varies by record, source and region. YouTube uses a visible video player; its autoplay preference controls whether playback starts automatically or waits for your tap.
A streaming preview helps you explore the music. It does not demonstrate the condition of the vinyl in your hands, the sound of that pressing, or whether the upload is the exact mix printed on the sleeve. For those questions, compare the track details and ask to hear the physical copy when the shop offers a listening station.
When the first source has nothing playable
Try alternate and Try harder are separate controls in the current beta. They help you explore other listening results instead of assuming the first unavailable preview means there is no music to find.
A network error or a service limit is also different from a confirmed missing track. If a search is still waiting or failed, read that state before deciding the record cannot be previewed. You can keep the find and return to it later.
For DJs: check the version, then keep the idea
A familiar title can hide an unfamiliar remix. Compare the track title, remix credit and release information before deciding that you have found the version you want. Previewing is a way to shortlist music, not a substitute for checking the record.
Keep gives an interesting find somewhere to live while you continue digging. DJ Bag, available in the 0.7.10 public beta, lets you organise record selections and browse their sleeves. Update through TestFlight to try it.
